In his four years as a council member, Barton and the council have served Brewton by paving roads, improving drainage on Gordon Lane and Sowell Road, having the two murals created downtown and making improvements to Burnt Corn Creek Park. The city has also recently procured funding to work on storm drainage on Davidson Street, Bonita Avenue and Highway 31 -- a project Barton would like to continue to be a part of.
The Alabama League of Municipalities granted Barton the designation of "Certified Municipal Official" in 2003, and he has since earned "Advanced Certified Municipal Official" status.
Barton works for the Department of Transportation as a highway maintenance technician supervising prison inmates, and he serves as deacon at Second Saint John Baptist Church.
