Brewton schools to develop a master construction plan

The Brewton City Board of Education voted on Monday to employ McKee and Associates to develop a master construction plan for the school system. The main construction projects that would be considered under this plan are the construction of a new middle school and the addition of some physical education facilities at T.R. Miller High School.
Revenue from the county's 10-mill ad valorem tax -- expected to be available beginning in December -- will at least partially cover the purchase of land for the new school and the hiring of architects to design the school.
Superintendent Lynn Smith expects all of the school system's construction plans to to come in at a total cost of $8 to 10 million. The costs will be financed through a bond issue and repayed from proceeds of the ad valorem tax.
Smith will be presenting a five-year capital plan that will include these major construction projects to the board at next month's meeting.
