Cory Middleton, the Jefferson Davis Community College baseball recruit who was drafted and signed with the Detroit Tigers, has gotten off to a quick start with the GCL Tigers (based in Lakeland, Florida) in Rookie League ball.
Middleton leads GCL with a .368 batting average (21-for-57). Nearly half of those 21 hits have gone for extra bases, as Middleton has hit four doubles, a triple and three homers to go along with eight RBIs.
Middleton, a shortstop from Escambia (Fla.) High School, was taken in the 10th round with the 283rd overall pick by Detroit in last month's amateur draft.
Another area drafted player came to terms last week when Andalusia High School pitcher Tyler Wilson agreed to terms with the Atlanta Braves. Wilson had been drafted in the 21st round with the 641st overall pick.
Wilson, a lefthanded pitcher who was clocked as high as 94 miles per hour at a Braves workout, had originally signed to play at L.B. Wallace College in Andalusia.
Wilson has some Brewton connections, as grandparents James and Betty Wilson reside here.
T.R. Miller High School and Brewton American Legion Post 79 players Jordan Ball and Jacob Salter recently participated in the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Underclassmen Showcase held at Birmingham Southern.
Salter and Ball will both be seniors at TRM next season.
A Blue Eagle Softball Tournament will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at O'Bannon Park.
