Escambia County Emergency Management Agency director David Jennings and the County Commission have received praise upon praise for their work after Hurricane Ivan devastated the area. There's no question that county officials and the leaders of each community did an outstanding job of providing help for citizens and beginning to put the pieces back together after Ivan left the county broken.
But Jennings and the county took an honorable step this week by gathering many of the relevent players, and asking the question "How can we handle this better next time?" Less than two months after the hurricane -- while disaster recovery issues are still fresh on everyone's mind -- the county is already planning to overcome bugs that impeded efficiency before the next hurricane or other disaster hits this area.
Any event that causes as much damage and danger as Ivan is going to present problems for officials and residents, but it's reassuring that those in charge are doing what they can to be on top of things.
