Attendance important for many reasons
Congratulations to the faculty, adminstrators and students of Brewton Elementary School who last week made headlines when the state Department of Education released a report ranking them sixth in the state in reading proficiency.
Ninety-one percent of BES's Kindergarten through third grade students read at grade level.
The success is being attributed to BES's implementation of the Alabama Reading Initiative. As part of the program, the school uses a measurement device known as the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, also known as DIBELS.
DIBELS allow teachers to measure the results of reading proficiency throughout the school year and pinpoint early in the program what assistance students are in need of.
But she also stresses the importance of parental involvement. Reading is a skill, and practice is key to mastering a skill, she said.
We applaud all of those involved in the success for a job done well.
