Congratulations, Brewton Middle School!
The local education system again put Brewton on the map this past weekend when Brewton Middle School won second place in state Science Olympiad competition at Huntingdon College Saturday, winning a berth in the National Science Olympiad in Illinois in May.
Educators and parents who have worked with Olympiad in the past will tell you it's not exactly a fair fight. Small schools like Brewton compete against students who attend schools that are larger than our whole system. They compete against schools who devote an entire period of every school day to Olympiad preparation, while local students train for Olympiad on their own time in the afternoons.
But compete they did, placing second behind Auburn Junior High, the only other school in the state to earn a chance at the national tournament.
Science Olympiad tournaments are a celebration of a team's accomplishments in demonstrating understanding and mastery of science, mathematics, and technology concepts that require not only knowledge and problem-solvig skills, but also the ability to work together as a team.
We salute Brewton Middle School, its science coaches and students for their efforts to win this honor. You make your community very proud.
