June 5 marked the beginning of Rabies Awareness Week in Alabama. Next Saturday, local veterinanrian Dr. John D. Bagwell will travel to rural areas in the county and help pet owners protect their animals from rabies.
Using rabies protection is crucial to keeping your animal alive and away from the dealy disease. In our county, the Escambia County Department of Public Health detected three cases of rabies within the past 12 months. There were 64 lab-confirmed cases in the state last year.
Animals such as racoons, bats, foxes and skunks appear to be the most reponsible for transmitting the virus. The only protection is a rabies vaccination.
On Saturday, June 1, shots will be available for $8 each for all dogs and cats, three months old or older. For a complete list of locations, check the June 5 edition of The Standard.
We encourage all pet owners to take a stance against rabies and get your animal vaccinated.
