For most first-year programs, their initial season is usually one big learning experience.
While that figures to be the case with the Bama Belles this summer, coach Tracy Smith hopes the program's members do more than just learn.
The Bama Belles are a 12-and-under softball team made up of girls from the Brewton/East Brewton area that will be competing in various tournaments during the summer and fall months.
Smith said one purpose of the program is to supplement the current softball program offered through the Brewton Area YMCA.
The Bama Belles, who have been practicing since late May, do not open up their campaign until July 29 when they participate in a tournament at Gulf Breeze (Fla.).
Right now the Bama Belles roster consists of 11 players.
The Bama Bells' coach has been active in softball programs for the past seven years.
Smith said the main purpose of the program is to benefit both the T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal High School softball programs.
Although the Bama Belles have not played one game yet, Smith is already looking towards the future of the program.
