Though many believe Father's Day has been unofficially celebrated since 1910, it was not declared a holiday until 1972, when Richard Nixon set aside the third Sunday of every June to honor fatherhood.
The holiday originated in America, but is now celebrated in different ways and on different days around the world.
The most ubiquitous Father's Day gift is the necktie.
Father of four, Greg Crutchfield, said he hopes his children opt for tools instead of ties.
Other popular items include socks, cologne and aftershave.
Many families look to shake things up after years of giving similar gifts. The key to gift-giving is to give something you would like to receive, while keeping in mind dad's hobbies and likes. Things like gift baskets filled with dad's favorite foods, movies and other knick-knacks might offer a refreshing change. Homemade gifts, like cards, are always a nice option, also.
Of course, no matter the gift, dad will be delighted. Make sure he feels loved and appreciated, not only on this special day, but every day.
Philip Jennings, father of two twin girls and one son, said that his kids make him breakfast every year.
No matter what the activity, most sons and daughters seek out activities to take part in with their fathers.
