An accident on West Underwood Street resulted in the loss of power for about 25 residents and surrounding streets Friday morning.
A timber truck hauling a tractor allegedly struck a low hanging cable line on Underwood Street, and it started a chain reaction resulting in three poles belonging to Alabama Power being completely knocked to the ground – one of which was holding a transformer.
Lt. James Hicks of the Brewton Police Department said that it looked as if the cable line was hanging too low.
The driver of the truck, Richard Royce, said that the cable company has been asked to raise the lines because he said they are not as high as they should be. Apparently, he had no knowledge that power poles were falling in the wake of his passing down the street.
Loretta Thomas of Alabama Power said that the affected households had their power restored fairly quickly. Those in the immediate area of the fallen poles had to wait for the replacements.
