Today the local Habitat for Humanity will celebrate its ninth anniversary at the Brewton Public Library and plan for its future. The event begins at 2 p.m.
In its nine-year history in Brewton, the organization has helped build eight homes. Currently, the group has received funds grant funds with which it plans to build two homes for families affected by hurricanes.
Habitat isn't a hand-out program, but one in which families who need help receive interest-free mortgages. Homowners pay a down payment of $600 and invest 400 hours or work into building their own home.
The organization keeps in touch with the homeowners long after the building process is over, making sure that the families know about, and are able to handle, all the work that comes with the upkeep of a home.
We salute this group for the work they have done and continue to do. Join them for the celebration, or as a volunteer. They need people who can hammer and paint, but also people who can answer the phones, help with bookkeeping, of speak for the organization. To volunteer, call them at 867-0095.
