Students in fourth, fifth, sixth and eight grades at Brewton city schools scored above state averages, as well as above their grade level in the California Achievement Tests, which were given state-wide in April. Scoring is based on a comparison with the national average. The students were tested in reading, mathematics, language, and spelling. Spelling was, by far, the strongest subject in Brewton schools and throughout the state.
Incumbent city councilman Terry Clark will face Norman Rabren in a runoff next week in East Brewton.
Starting August 1, customers in Brewton will be paying more for natural gas. Brewton city councilmen recently approved a 6.3 percent increase after Mayor Ray Sherer reported that the Brewton area natural gas supplier has raised the wholesale price of gas.
Nine new teachers will join the faculty at the W.S. Neal schools this fall.
