Ministers comforted the family and friends of Marine Cpl. Christopher David Winchester Thursday with assurances that the fallen soldier has gone to a better place.
Winchester, who was 23, died July 14 in Iraq when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb near Terbil. More than 200 people attended his funeral service Thursday at Flomaton High School, where he graduated from high school a few short years ago.
Winchester's pastor, the Rev. Doug Greer from Divine Temple Church, expressed similar sentiments.
Greer recalled an email that Winchester sent home during Hurricane Dennis.
Greer believes that Winchester is in heaven, smiling his memorable smile.
Flomaton Mayor Dewey Bondurant presented Winchester's family with a plaque on behalf of local citizens.
Graveside services followed Weaver Cemetery on Appleton Road. A 21-gun salute heralded the arrival of Winchester's casket.
Many people attended the funeral to support the family, as well as out of respect for the fallen Marine.
James Smith didn't know Winchester personally, but he did know his grandfather.
Winchester will be missed by his family and friends, but they seek solace in believing that he has gone to a better place.
"My brother's race has been won, his finish line has been crossed," Byrd said. "He is now with God. It's not how you start your race, or even where you stand today. It's how you finish it. I believe my brother would say today that it's all worth it.".
