As the losses mounted, so did the level of frustration.
At least for one day anyway, the Jefferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks volleyball team was able to brush that aside Thursday when they beat visiting Southern Union for their first victory of the season.
Thursday's triumph, a four-set victory, was also the first Alabama Community College Conference win of the season for JDCC. The Lady Warhawks evened their record at 1-1 in that part of its schedule and improved to 1-5 overall.
No other information on Thursday's match was available at press time.
JDCC dropped its home opener Tuesday when it fell to Bevill State-Fayette 30-17, 30-18, 30-14. The contest was the first for the Lady Warhawks in 10 days, who had three matches postponed during that span.
Freshman Jessica Stafford provided the Lady Warhawks with their best surge of the match in set two. Stafford had a five-point run early in the set that trimmed Bevill State's lead from 11-4 to 11-9. Later in the set Stafford had a three-point string with an ace that trimmed an 11-point deficit of 29-18 to 29-21.
Ashley Willoughby, also a freshman, had a pair of three-point strings. Her last point of the second string brought JDCC within 16-15 before Bevill State went on a 14-2 run.
The Lady Warhawks, who played in the Pensacola Tournament this weekend, host Gulf Coast (Fla.) Community College Wednesday at 6 p.m. That match was originally set for August 30, but was rescheduled after Hurricane Katrina blew through the area.
