As the region football season approaches the halfway point, the playoff berth contenders and pretenders are starting to emerge.
If the season ended today, T.R. Miller and Pike County would have the top two seeds and the first-round home games for Class 3A Region 1. Both of those teams are 3-0 in region play.
Straughn is currently the third seed with a 2-1 region record. W.S. Neal, Abbeville, Slocomb and Headland are all tied for the fourth and final qualifying position. Abbeville has yet to play any of the teams it is tied. W.S. Neal, Slocomb and Headland are all 1-1 against the tied teams in head-to-head competition.
Region 1 is paired against Region 2 for the first round of the playoffs. Region 2 consists of Alabama Christian, Barbour County, Calhoun, Montgomery Academy, Montgomery Catholic, Dadeville, Holtville and Lafayette.
At this time, Montgomery Academy and Lafayette are both tied for that region's lead with 3-0 records. Both are 3-1 overall. They would have the top two seeds and first-round home games.
Holtville currently has the number three seed with a 2-1 region record, 2-2 overall. Montgomery Catholic, Alabama Christian, Barbour County and Dadeville are all tied for the fourth and final playoff position with a 1-2 region record. Montgomery Catholic is the only one of those teams with a 2-2 overall record. The others are all 1-3.

The T.R. Miller "B" football team has had what was once a seven-game season reduced to four games.
The latest contest to be wiped off the slate is the October 10 home game against Andalusia. Andalusia's varsity is playing a makeup game against Gulf Shores that day and is unavailable to play.
Earlier T.R. Miller had two games wiped out against Escambia County.
The Jefferson Davis Community College softball program has three scholarship positions still available for the 2006 spring season. Interested players do not have to be currently enrolled, but would have to be enrolled for the spring semester.
A tryout session will be held November 12 at 2 p.m. at the JDCC diamond.
Interested players can contact coach Misti Nims at 809-1632 for additional information.
