To recognize Veteran's Day, which fell on Friday, Nov. 11, all the third grade teachers at Brewton Elementary School invited several local veterans to talk about what Veteran's Day means and the memories they had when they served as officers during several wars.
As a culmination to the big day, children interviewed veterans from all over and wrote essays on their experiences.
Activities were planned throughout the week where children were quizzed on several wars and why the United States celebrates Veteran's day.
On Nov. 10, Joe Dozier, Agnes Mosley, Don Ellis, Tommy Gerlach, Larry Bailey and Mike Floyd visited with the children.
At noon, they ate in the cafeteria, and then entered each of the third grade classrooms to talk about their experiences.
City and county offices were closed on Friday, as well as area schools and other businesses.
Veteran's Day honors the courage and patriotism of all men and women who have served in the United States armed forces.
In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, Armistice Day; it became a national holiday in 1938.
