Mr. Harry Lazenby Weaver, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at his residence in Brewton. He was a native of Forest Home and moved to Brewton from Camden at age 13. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church of Brewton since 1927.
He graduated from T.R. Miller High School in 1930, Birmingham Southern College, AB, in 1953 and Auburn University, Miss., in 1948. He worked for the Escambia County, Alabama, School System for 46 years, serving 22 years as a principal and teacher and 24 years as County Superintendent of Education, a post to which he was elected four times and was appointed for eight years. He was instrumental in securing the passage of the Oil Severence tax for Escambia County and Brewton City Schools. He was named Superintendent Emeritus of Escambia County and given office space in the County Board of Education for life upon his retirement in 1981. His father, Oliver C. Weaver Sr., also served as Escambia County Superintendent of Education for 28 years. He also served as president of East Brewton Civitan Club, president of Brewton Lion Club and was selected as Brewton's Man of the Year in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Alice Brooks Weaver; a grandson, Travis Busey Jr. and a sister, Ruth Simonton.
He is survived by one son, Dr. Harry T. (Sarah) Weaver of Albuquerque, N.M., and their children, Harry Jr., Catherine, and Don; two daughters, Elaine W. Sites of Pensacola, Fla., and her children, Robby, Summer, and Richard, and Martha (Kenneth) Corbin of Brewton, and their children, Sandra, Dena, Kellie and Katie; two brothers, Dr. O.C. Weaver Jr. of Birmingham and Luther H. Weaver of Gainesville, Ga.; two sisters, Edna Carmichael of Salisbury, N.C., and Lucille W. Baldwin of Branford, Fla., and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Brewton, with Dr. Ed Glaize officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Craver's Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Harry L. Weaver Scholarship Fund at BankTrust, P.O.
