While they never trailed and won by a convincing margin, the Brewton Middle School Lady Tigers had to shake off a pesky Flomaton Lady Hurricanes squad 38-20 Monday to remain unbeaten on the season.
Meanwhile the Brewton Tigers had runs of 8-0, 10-0 and 8-0 again in the first half en route to their 50-15 thrashing of the Hurricanes to move back above the .500 mark of the season.
The Lady Tigers (5-0) used eight first quarter points by Nakiya Smith to open up a double digit lead of 14-3 in the opening frame.
Brewton widened that lead to as much as 13 points on two occasions in the second quarter and still had a double digit lead of 18-8 at halftime.
Flomaton, which made just three field goals in the first half, matched that figure in less than three minutes in the third quarter. Two of those were three-pointers by Sarah Neal and Tiffany Anderson and brought the Lady Hurricanes to within 23-16.
Brewton was able to cool off the Flomaton rally, as buckets by Keydra Shedrone, Ihsa Thompson and Nakiya Smith helped stretch the lead up to 30-16 and eventually triggered a 15-4 run by the Lady Tigers to end the game.
Smith led Brewton with 10 points, while Thompson had nine.
The Tigers (3-2) scored the first eight points and 18 of the first 19 en route to their dominating victory.
Keyanta Lewis fueled Brewton's 18-1 lead in the first quarter with four buckets, two of which came off offensive rebounds. Lewis went on to lead the Tigers with 12 points for the game.
Flomaton was held without a field goal for the game's
first eight minutes until Shay Gibson connected for the home team.
That did little to stop the Tigers, as two second quarter field goals by Terez Lane helped widen the cushion to 28-3 by halftime. Three buckets by Chris Bell in the third quarter and fourth quarter three-pointers by Arkeem Jackson and Kori Jackson were icing on the
cake.
The Brewton teams head to Carver Thursday. Play starts at 5 p.m. with the girls game.
