The Annual Wild Game Supper has become a tradition in Brewton with outdoorsmen coming from near and far to sample some good cooking and listen to a great speaker.
The 15th annual supper will be held this Saturday, Feb. 4, and the guest speaker will be Marc Pittman, the father of two boys who grew up to play football for the University of Texas. Pittman grew up in Louisiana, the 11th child of 16. He always wanted to be the best father he could be to his own children, and when he became the father of two sons he was able to devote himself to making sure they made the right decisions and knew what was important in life.
His sons were both excellent football players and the oldest, Cole, was attending the University of Texas, where he played football, when he was involved in a fatal accident. The book &#8220Raising Cole,” written by Pittman, is the story of the heartbreak of losing a child. It is also about his other child, Chase, who was left to fill the void left behind and make his own mark on the world.
Pittman will speak about this pain and heartache when he brings his message of faith and hope to those who attend the Wild Game Supper. His message is one of overcoming a terrible event in his life and sharing what he learned with others.
The Annual Wild Game Supper began 15 years ago, inspired by the Rev. John Finklea, who was the pastor of First Baptist. He, being a hunter himself, knew of the bonds between hunters and believed it would be a good way to bring people into the church. To date, the supper draws a crowd of between 400 and 600 people each year. The prizes are all excellent and the speaker is always a standout, either in sports or in some form of outdoors.
The supper will begin at 5:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Brewton and will be followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. where Pittman will speak and door prizes will be given. Tickets to the supper are $3 each and may be purchased at the church office.
