It was not the best day the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks baseball program has ever had, but it could have been a lot worse.
JDCC suffered its first blemishes of the season Friday when it was swept in both ends of a twinbill by Wallace State-Hanceville.
After a 7-3 loss in the opener, Wallace State-Hanceville stormed out to an 8-0 lead in the first three innings of game two. Instead of threatening to succumb by the 10-run rule, JDCC battled back even though it suffered an 11-8 defeat.
Starter Ronnie Baker suffered the loss, as he went the first two and two-thirds innings and allowed a pair of homeruns before his departure.
The Warhawks also went deep in the game, as Jamar Bryant had a solo homer.
While it was it was seven-run second inning that led to JDCC's downfall in game two, it was a five-run second inning that led to the Warhawks demise in the opener.
Wallace State-Hanceville extended that lead to 6-0 with a run in the top of the third, but JDCC battled back in the bottom of the fifth inning when a two-run double by Bryant cut the deficit to 6-2.
The visitors got one of those runs back in top of the sixth inning to make it 7-2 before the Warhawks got an RBI single from Jake Bonds in the bottom of the sixth.
Starter Bubba Mack suffered the loss, as he went the first two and two-thirds innings. Much like the second game JDCC got solid relief work from its bullpen, as relievers Jeremy Greenwell and Alex Granade allowed just one run in four and one-third innings.
The Warhawks will get their first road test of the season Tuesday when they travel to Marion Military Institute for a 12 noon nine-inning game. JDCC then heads to Jones College (Miss.) Thursday for a 1 p.m. twinbill.
