Talk about a rousing success.
Relay for Life exceeded its goal this year, raising $58,730.71 to help the American Cancer Society with cancer research and awareness campaigns.
That's a phenomenal amount of money for our small community, and it shows how dedicated this year's Relay teams have been to the cause.
Fourteen Relay teams competed in this year's event, held on the grounds of the Brewton YMCA.
The event was held outside for the first time, which may have boosted participation.
Cancer touches nearly every family, and it does not discriminate. The money raised by Brewton's Relay for Life will help those families cope with the disease, and it could one day help find new treatments for cancer.
Not only that, but the campaign also helps raise awareness in our community about cancer - and the ways that we can prevent it, from staying out of the sun to quitting smoking.
Kudos to all involved with this year's Relay; we know we will only build on this success from here.
