There have been no records kept for most consecutive hits by a Jefferson Davis Community College softball player. If there had been, Lakyn Newton's name may now be at the top.
The Lady Warhawks sophomore infielder recorded nine straight hits in nine straight at bats during a three-game stretch last week.
Newton's hit streak began in her final at bat in Wednesday's doubleheader opener against Ozark-Enterprise when she singled. In game two, Newton ran her hit streak to six at bats with a perfect five-for-five, as she singled in the second, fourth and sixth innings. She then doubled in the seventh inning and homered in the eighth inning.
In Friday's twinbill at Alabama Southern, Newton drew a walk in the first inning of game one, which does not count as an official at bat. She followed up the walk with singles in the third, sixth and seventh innings to run her hit streak to nine at bats.
Newton, a Greenville native, was finally retired in her opening bat in game two. Even then she still reached safely on a fielder's choice.
