Wallace State-Dothan did nothing to hurt its 20th place ranking in the national junior college softball poll Saturday, as the Lady Governors swept a pair from the visiting Jeffferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks.
JDCC (10-21 overall and 1-5 in the Alabama Community College Conference south division) took WSD down to the wire in game one before it fell 2-1. The Lady Governors (23-2 overall and 7-1 in the ACCC) needed only five innings to complete the sweep with a 9-1 triumph in game two.
Although the Lady Warhawks were limited to just three hits in game one, they still had their chances to pull the upset.
JDCC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Carleen Clark reached on an infield error, moved up a base on Makeyia Burt's single and scored on Nikki Madden's RBI single.
WSD also got an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning when a dropped flyball in the outfield led to the tying run.
It stayed deadlocked until the bottom of the seventh inning when WSD's Britaney Grice singled, moved into scoring position on Jordana Crowdis' groundout and scored on Ashley Huntley's game-winning single.
Madden suffered the loss, as she allowed seven hits and walked four.
Game two was also a tight contest most of the game.
After WSD took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Warhawks answered back with the tying run in the top of the fourth inning. After Madden and Lakyn Newton both singled, Stacy Sanders moved both up a base with an infield groundout. Katie Simmons lofted a sacrifice fly that plated Newton to even the game at 1-1.
Defense proved to be JDCC's downfall. The Lady Warhawks committed six errors in the game, four of which came in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lady Governors erupted for six runs to take a 7-1 lead against JDCC pitcher Lakyn Newton. WSD added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning that ended the game early on the mercy rule.
JDCC, which hosted Faulkner State Tuesday, is also home today when it hosts Enterprise-Ozark in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
