One of the first things I noticed about Brewton in my first few days in town a month ago were the purple ribbons tied to mailboxes, light posts and doors.
They signified support for Relay for Life, the annual daylong fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, but they told me one more thing: This is not a community that sits around and waits for something to happen.
Many of the people I've met over the past few weeks have told me that, both in words and actions. As one gentleman told me, &#8220This town has as little apathy as I've seen in a city its size.”
Anyone who thinks a small town is a sleepy little place hasn't been to Brewton, apparently.
In the next several weeks, we'll have several opportunities to come together and make a difference - and I'm planning to attend as much as I can, because I know that's where Brewton residents will be.
This week, several churches will hold their annual Holy Week services, held each day at noon. Each day, a different pastor will preach at a different congregation.
That's a great way to improve relations - and understanding - among the city's churches. I'm impressed the Holy Week services have been going on so long.
