Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks baseball coach Darrell Blevins has had plenty of opportunities over the past three weeks to watch
what figure to be the top three teams and state qualifiers from the Alabama Community College Conference south division.
The Warhawks concluded a 1-14 stretch against those teams Saturday when they dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Wallace State-Dothan. The Governors notched an 11-3 win in game one and a 7-4 victory in game two.
JDCC (15-23 overall) had a 2-0 lead through its first three at-bats in game one. David Washington scored in the opening inning when a ball hit was Steven Bingert reached on an error. Bingert also drove home Jeremy White in the third inning with an RBI single.
The Governors (16-2 in the ACCC and 35-9 overall) took control of the game in the bottom of the third inning when they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs thanks to a string of four hits, three walks and a hit batter.
WSD tacked on another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth that increased its lead to 11-2.
Bubba Mack led the Warhawks with a pair of hits. Daniel Hodge, White, Bingert, Brandon Sapp and Jamar Bryant all added a hit.
Warhawks starting pitcher Alex Granade suffered the loss, as he worked into the third inning and was touched for four runs.
JDCC had a couple of leads slip away in game two.
Doubles by Washington and Bingert gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. WSD took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but JDCC rallied in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead when Bingert and Bryant had RBI singles. Another run scored on a wild pitch.
Three walks followed by three singles added up to a four-run rally by WSD in the bottom of the fifth, which put the Governors up 7-4.
Jake Bonds and Bingert both had a pair of hits to lead the Warhawks. Mack, Ben Green, Bryant, Kenny McDonald and Washington all had one.
Ben Mezick, the second of four JDCC pitchers, took the loss. Mezick allowed four runs in three innings of work.
The Warhawks, who began another ACCC south set at Bishop State Tuesday, will continue that series Thursday when they host the Wildcats Thursday for a 1 p.m. nine-inning game. Bishop State will also be back in Brewton Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
