More than 100 people gathered at the City Park Saturday for an Earth Day cleanup.
The young and old were handed garbage bags, rubber gloves and orange vests and assigned to various spots along highways 31, 41 and Sowell Road. Some students were given extra credit by their teachers for attending the Earth Day activities, while others just wanted to get Brewton clean.
The community-wide cleanup was sponsored by the city of Brewton's quality of life committee and by the chamber of commerce.
At a picnic lunch at the park following the cleanup, organizer and quality of life committee member Molly Ruzic encouraged the participants not to let the anti-litter campaign stop with the Earth Day cleanup.
Ruzic thanked everyone for their participation.
At the picnic, high school students Kelly Stallworth and Antonio Gomez even performed a song they composed for the occasion - &#8220The Trash Picker-Uppers.”
