It was a split that had vastly different consequences for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks baseball team.
JDCC's 7-2 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Enterprise-Ozark extended the Warhawks season-high winning streak to four games. The flip side came in game two when Enterprise-Ozark snapped a 22-game losing streak in Alabama Community College Conference play with a 9-6 victory.
Lefthander Alex Granade picked up his first win of the season for JDCC (8-17 in ACCC play and 22-26 overall) in the opener when he threw a complete game four-hitter with six strikeouts.
Jake Bonds erased a 1-0 Enterprise lead in the top of the second inning with a two-run single. The Warhawks extended that lead to 3-1 in the top of the third when Ryan Gray's RBI single plated David Washington.
Enterprise (1-22 in ACCC play and 4-30 overall) cut that lead to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the third.
It stayed that way until the top of the seventh inning, when JDCC used an unfamiliar weapon to bust the game open. Jesse Edwards led off with a single, and Nathan Evans followed with a two-run homer that made it 5-2. The same scenario happened later in the inning when Ryan Gray singled and Kenny McDonald went deep with a two-run homer that made it 7-2.
The Warhawks were unable to dig their way out of a 9-1 hole in the game two loss.
JDCC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Wes Burt, but the Boll Weevil scored nine unanswered runs over their next five at-bats to open up a 9-1 lead.
Despite the huge hole, the Warhawks nearly climbed out in the top of the seventh inning. RBI singles by Steven Bingert and Nathan Hughes, a two-run single by Jordan Currid and a sacrifice fly by J.J. Cutler trimmed Enterprise's lead all the way down to 9-6.
JDCC had the tying run at the plate when the Boll Weevil finally closed the door on the rally.
Starter Adam Reed went the first three and one-third innings and took the loss.
The Warhawks will conclude the season with two trips to Faulkner State. JDCC heads there Thursday for a 1 p.m. nine-inning game and make a return trip Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
