The state treasurer's office could have the answer. The office has 1,315 items with a value of $25 or more that are linked to Brewton addresses.
In all, the treasurer's office lists 3,000 items with addresses in the county.
A record amount of unclaimed property was received in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 - $80,049,824, Ivey said. More than 31,800 people claimed about $13,840,000 in previously unclaimed property.
Alabama changed its unclaimed property law in 2004 to make it easier for individuals to claim small amounts of property, Deputy State Treasurer Anthony Leigh said. Claimants can fill out a one-page affidavit form to receive their money.
Most of the property is liquid assets in the form of unclaimed checks, he said. The only tangible property in the state treasurer's department is that from abandoned safe deposit boxes.
The unclaimed property program was launched in 1971, and property is held in perpetuity.
Ivey encouraged Escambia County residents to check with the treasurer's office to see whether they are due any money.
