Members of the Jefferson Davis Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently attended the PTK International Convention in Seattle, Wash.
While at the convention, the delegates participated in educational forums designed to increase awareness of the new Phi Theta Kappa international honors study topic: Gold, Gods, and Glory: the Global Dynamics of Power and the new service initiative Operation Green.
The delegates also set goals and elected international officers for the coming year.
Students were able to meet and hear the experiences of Dr. Madeleine Albright, the first female secretary of state; Cokie Roberts, an Emmy award-winning journalist; and Mirta Ojito, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author.
At the transfer college fair, the students were able to speak to representatives from the best colleges and universities in the country.
In the past year, the Phi Theta Kappa organization collectively raised $1.4 million for the American Cancer Society and more than $50,000 for Hurricane Katrina victims with the &#8220Students Helping Students” initiative.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international academic honor society for two-year college students.
