Teachers, administrators and students at Brewton Elementary School have had heavy hearts recently.
They lost a member of their school family with the death of longtime teacher Amy Jo Pirkle Morgan.
Morgan, who left her job as Title 1 teacher in December to continue her fight against cancer, was a great inspiration to students and teachers alike, principal Deborah Marriott said.
As Morgan battled the disease, she continued to work, Marriott said, noting that Morgan worked even throughout the time she was receiving chemotherapy.
But Amy Morgan was an inspiration without her illness, simply because of the hard work and dedication she poured into her job as a teacher, Marriott said.
Sometimes it can be hard for teachers to push children, Marriott said. Morgan didn't take the easy way out, but she still made her job look easy, the principal said.
Fellow teachers rallied around Morgan as she fought cancer, holding hat parties to put together a collection for Morgan to wear when she lost her hair during chemotherapy. She wore them all, Marriott said.
Even after she left her job late last year, Marriott said, Morgan wished she could reach out to the students and tutor them.
Morgan was also a member of Brewton First Baptist Church and the Alabama Education Association. The Mongtomery native had lived in Brewton for 27 years. She is survived by her husband, John T. Morgan, and three daughters, along with other relatives and friends.
