Dr. William Robert Harvey, president of Hampton University, Hampton, Va., and a former member of Baptist Hill Church, has made it possible each year for a member or members of the Baptist Hill Church who are members of a graduating class for that particular year to receive the Claudis P. Harvey Memorial Scholarship, providing the student can meet certain criteria.
The Claudis P. Harvey Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Harvey's mother, Mrs. Claudis P. Harvey, a longtime member of the Baptist Hill Church who served in many capacities of this church: senior choir member, president of the General Missionary Society, Sunday school worker and BTU worker.
The winners for 2006 are Lauren Long and Joy Nicole McCorvey. Each member will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used at the college of her choice.
Long attended St. Stephen Episcopal Church preschool and later attended Brewton City System's schools.
She will graduate from T.R. Miller with a YTD GPA of 3.93. Although she has a strong belief in the academic preparedness of life, she said she has an equally strong conviction on work ethics.
At the tender age of 9, she had a homegrown tomato business; by the time she was 10, she ventured into a lemonade business, and at 11, she began a baking business, which she still maintains.
She is a member of the Baptist Hill Church where she sings in the S.C.T. Choir, serves as secretary for the Sunday School Ministry and participates in Youth Bible Study.
She has won many honors and awards; National Honor Roll 2005, Who's Who Among American High School Students 2005 edition, T.R. Miller High School Band, superior rating-solo and ensemble band contest and the Spirit of Junior Miss Award.
This fall, she plans to attend Jefferson Davis Community College. After JDCC, she plans to study at Jacksonville State University. She will major in retail business and minor in real estate.
Joy Nicole McCorvey has always attended the Brewton city schools. Throughout her entire school career, Joy has always maintained an A/B average.
She has played basketball for the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers for the past five years and has received many awards and recognitions.
During her eighth-grade year, the Lady Tigers won the State Championship and she was elected to the All Tournament team.
For the past three summers she has played on the Amateur Athletic Union Nike Team.
This is a traveling team that plays in different parts of the United States for college coaches and recruiters. While on this team, she has had the privilege to travel to Portland, Las Vegas, Seattle, Washington D.C., Chicago, Augusta, New Orleans and many other places.
As a result of all of her many accomplishments in basketball, she signed a full four-year scholarship with St. Johns' University in Queens, N.Y., Although basketball is her favorite sport, she is very diverse when it comes to her athletic ability.
She has won many medals in track including first in state in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and the 4×400 relay team. This school term she played volleyball for the first time in school history and the volleyball team won its area match and made it to the Regional playoffs. She was even nicknamed &#8220The Mac Attack.”
McCorvey has made the All State Choir for two years and played in the T.R. Miller High School marching band for four years.
She has been section leader for two of her four years; she is first chair in her section. She is a member of the student council and was homecoming senior attendant during this school term.
Last summer she worked at the Maynard Cooper and Gale Law Firm in Birmingham as an assistant paralegal where she worked on the Richard Scrushy case and documented papers for other cases.
She has played many different parts at Baptist Hill Church: she is a member and a director for the S.C.T. Choir, she is a reporter for the Sunday school ministry and she has served as an assistant pianist for the Sunday school ministry.
At St. Johns' University, Joy will major in sports medicine while working part-time at an investment bank.
