Brewton City Council Tuesday unanimously approved a rezoning project that will bring a new Walgreen's to the area.
Acting on a recommendation from the Brewton Planning Commission, a parcel of land located on the northeast corner of Douglas Avenue and Douglas Lane will be rezoned from R-1 Low Density Single-Family Residential District to B-3 General Business District.
According to Johnny Watson, a land and real estate developer based out of Mobile who has been working closely with the project, the pharmacy will be of typical size - about 15,000 sq. ft. - and will include 60 parking spaces. Construction is set to begin in 45 days, Watson said.
According to Pete Diurno, director of community development, it will be the city's priority to check on the requests voiced at the planning meeting. It was requested the city bring an ALDOT district engineer to the site to study the intersection for an additional length of the left turning lane as motorists head south. It was requested a left turn arrow be included in the traffic lights for those motorists.
It was also requested ALDOT engineers reduce the speed limit from the north city limit on US 31 heading south be reduced because of the traffic safety and speeders. The current speed limit is 40 mph.
