Residents in East Brewton who allow their grass to grow out of control may be issued a citation - and could receive court time.
Lawton Shipp, a city inspector, told council members at their Monday meeting he had issued about 30 citations to residents who have let their lawn exceed the 12-inch height limit. Anything above 12-inches violates the city's grass and weed nuisance ordinance.
Councilman Wayne Howard related the grass problem to the city's mosquito problem. The city has been spraying for mosquitoes twice a week. The cost to spray is $300 each night.
Mayor Terry Clark said if residents would follow the city's nuisance ordinance and keep their grass cut, it might cut down on the mosquito problem.
Not only does overgrown grass attract mosquitoes, but it also provides a breeding ground and shelter for rats, mice, snakes and other insects and pests. Overgrown grass can also constitute a fire threat or hazard, especially during dry conditions.
According to the city's ordinance, residents found in violation of the ordinance on overgrown grass can receive a minimum fine of $250 or a maximum fine of $500.
In other city news, in compliance with the Click it or Ticket program, East Brewton police officers will be conducting routine traffic stops beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Officers will be citing motorists in violation of any law. A grant will be paying for the officers' overtime, Police Chief B.C. Cooper said.
