Carolyn Michelle Marshall, a 2006 graduate of W.S. Neal High School, has been awarded college scholarships totaling approximately $21,000.
The awards include the renowned Gates Millennium Scholars.
The Gates Millennium Scholars is funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is awarded to eligible high school applicants throughout the country who have demonstrated academic achievement, community service and leadership qualities.
The goal of GMS is to encourage and support students to complete college and continue on to earn graduate degrees in certain areas of professions.
It is renewable each year throughout her undergraduate and graduate years.
Included in the awards are scholarships from The Brewton Sportsman Club, The Jay Hospital, The Adrian and Marie Downing, The Laura Calfee Higdon and The Auburn University Board of Trustees.
Throughout her high school years, she has been very active in extra-curricula activities and within her community.
Included are The National Honor Society, W.S. Neal Student Government, Mu Alpha Theta Math Team, W.S. Neal Lady Eagles Basketball, W.S. Neal Marching and Concert Bands, the students' populace election and Miss W.S. Neal Homecoming Queen, 2005-2006.
She has participated in Jefferson Davis Community College's Upward Bound Program for four years, and is W.S. Neal's Escambia County Executive Committee Essay winner, 2006.
Additionally, she has earned college credits through the Jefferson Davis Community College's dual enrollment program for high school students.
Her community activities include serving as pianist at both Second Bethlehem and Old Springhill Baptist Churches for several years.
She tutored in the Boykin Community After-School Outreach Program and helped with the Boykin/Damascus Hurricane Relief Program.
In December 2005, she was presented as an Alpha Kappa Alpha Debutante, sponsored by Delta Iota Omega Chapter of Pensacola, Fla.
She has chosen and will enroll in Auburn University in fall 2006.
Marshall is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Marshall of the Brewton Boykin community.
