At the annual Alabama Association of Retired and Senior Volunteer Program meeting in March of this year, members decided their state-wide project for this year would be a fitness program developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
Their program is titled Walking Works: The Blue Program for a Healthier America.
Walking Works challenges older Americans to walk more and get a daily dose of physical activity.
Escambia County RSVP will have three or four teams of RSVP volunteers competing with each other over the six-week program.
Prizes and awards will be given to the volunteers.
John Folsom, an RSVP volunteer advisory council member, has decided to build a walking trail around the former Flomaton Hospital in order for a team to participate. He has gotten some help from the community and RSVP volunteers will be assisting Folsom this Saturday, June 17, from 8 to 10 a.m.
RSVP hopes this could encourage people in the community to help with the walking trail or other events that involve physical activity in their area.
