Looking Back … 50 years

Fifty years ago on June 21, 1956, things were hopping around Brewton.
C.C. Fountain won the election to be the mayor of Brewton for the fifth term, defeating Theodore May.
A real battle was brewing about whether the county should be wet or dry, with full page ads telling the public what alcohol would do to them and their morals.
A landmark (the Rankin home) was being torn down on Belleville Avenue.
Plans were being made for the opening of the Abernathy Clinic in Flomaton.
The movie &#8220Slightly Scarlet” was showing at the Ritz Theater and it was described as a ‘scorching expose.'
Glen Ford and Donna Reed were playing in &#8220Ransom” at the Eagle Drive-in.
Bill Brooks wrote a column about the &#8220teevy” and how it was taking the place of a good old western movie on Saturday.
Ezell's Standard Station was selling tires for $13.95.
T.R. Miller's band was off to Miami to perform at a Lions International Convention.
