Brewton Guard members' bravery to be recognized
Brewton residents are lucky to live among heroes - and those heroes will get their recognition next month in a special ceremony.
Members of the 1165th Military Police Company of the Alabama Army National Guard - including the detachment from Brewton - will receive prestigious awards in Fairhope in honor of their heroism during service in Iraq.
Members will receive the Presidential Unit Citation and the Valorous Unit Award, in addition to their combat action badges.
National Guard officials said this is the first time a unit has received both the Valorous Unit Award and the Presidential Unit Citation for the same deployment.
So much has been said recently about the war in Iraq and its supporters and detractors. While members of Congress this week have been waging their own political war about the war, our soldiers continue to do their duty in Iraq. Several men and women from the Brewton area are headed off for training and future deployment to Iraq this month, with units based in other cities.
Our soldiers deserve our support - and they deserve our praise for their job well done protecting us and preserving freedom.
