Kevin Davis did not get many plays from his defense, but for good reason. They did not have to make many.
The Brewton Little League 11-year-old all-star righthander struck out 16 to pace his team to a 7-1 win over East Brewton in Sunday's district game played at Andalusia.
The win sent Brewton into Tuesday's championship round where it once again met East Brewton. Brewton needed to win only once to win the title and earn a berth in the state tournament. East Brewton needs to beat Brewton twice in order to win the tournament. If a second game in the championship series is necessary, it will be played today at 7 p.m.
Davis struck out the side in four of the six innings, which included the final three. While he was touched for seven hits, four of those came in the last three innings after Brewton had accumulated a 7-0 lead.
Nine of Brewton's 13 hits came from the top four spots in its lineup. Three of those came from leadoff man Cody Smith. Smith doubled and scored in the first inning, singled and scored in the third and belted a two-run homer in the fourth.
Smith doubled and scored on Wesley Maddox's double in the top of the first inning and gave Brewton a lead it would never relinquish.
It was still 1-0 after two innings when play was stopped for nearly an hour due to lightning. When play resumed, Smith started another rally with a leadoff single. Smith stole second and moved over to third on a single by Jacob Fillmore. Davis then helped himself with a two-run double off East Brewton hurler Brian Settle that upped the lead to 3-0.
East Brewton's best chance to break through against Davis came in the bottom of the third. East Brewton loaded the bases with a single by Cord Moulder, a double by Camryn Blackman and a base on balls to Settle. Brewton and Davis were able to get out of the two-out jam when Ryan Hunt made a running catch in centerfield on a ball hit by Dalton Evans.
Brewton broke the game open in the top of the fourth with a four-run, two-out uprising. Ryan Hunt singled and moved up a base on an error. After Sam Smith rounded out, Hunt scored when Tyler Dehoff reached on an error. Cody Smith followed with a two-run homer that made it 6-0. Singles by Fillmore and Maddox set up an RBI double by Davis that plated Brewton's final run.
East Brewton spoiled Davis' shutout in the bottom of the sixth. Hunter Mullins singled and scored when Shawn Lucas reached on a two-out error.
