Getting to state has been one thing, while making an impact at state has been another for Brewton Little League teams in recent years.
The Brewton Little League 11-year-old stars will try to reverse that trend when state competition gets underway at Mobile Saturday.
Brewton's last two state entries, the 11-year-olds last year at Huntsville and the 9-10-year-olds two years ago at Mobile, made quick exits from state tournament competition.
Maddox was an assistant coach on the 9-10s team that played at state in 2004.
Brewton earned its state ticket when it won the district tournament at Andalusia last week. Brewton won both of its games in that tournament, each against East Brewton, by scores of 7-1 and 4-3. Even though his team has played just two games, Maddox thinks it has been enough for his squad to set an identity.
Brewton got a combined three singles, four doubles and a homerun from its top four lineup spots filled by Cody Smith, Jacob Fillmore, Wesley Maddox and Kevin Davis in game one. In game two, Brewton got a combined two singles, a double, a triple and four RBIs from its six through nine spots in the lineup represented by Rob Stokes, Rasheem Thomas, Ryan Hunt, Sam Smith, Brett Smith and Tyler Dehoff.
Brewton also got two stellar pitching performances at the district tournament. Kevin Davis fanned 16 East Brewton batters in a complete game win in game one, while Maddox fanned 10 in a complete game effort in game two.
Maddox and Davis are the only Brewton pitchers who have worked in an actual game since the Brewton Little League season ended in May. Maddox is not concerned about that layoff.
Wesley Maddox is the only Brewton player with any state tournament experience.
Pairings have not been announced at this time.
