Friendly competition was the order of the day Tuesday as East Brewton hosted its annual Fourth of July activities.
From the morning's spades tournament to Bingo, horseshoes and even some campaigning by area candidates, the games ended with spectators cheering on the colorful armada of tiny plastic ducks in the duck race.
Prizes are awarded all of the winners, but the proceeds of the games fund the annual event and the fireworks, which ended the evening with a bang.
Mayor Terry Clark said competition for the various games can be fierce.
But although the contestants are serious, they are also out to have fun.
Throughout the day, state House candidates Skippy White and Alan Baker took time to shake hands. Both said they were enjoying the chance to meet the voters.
White, the Democratic incumbent, faces Republican Baker in the November election.
East Brewton officials and volunteers also sold hot dogs, hamburgers and sweet treats throughout the day. Local singers and dance groups also performed.
But perhaps the most watched event was the duck race, which saw hundreds of pink, blue and yellow ducks set free on Murder Creek in a race to the finish line.
Winners were: First, Teresa Murphy; second, James Rogers; third, Evan Clayton.
