Toothpicks, rulers, pencils and rolling pins.
Those items were no surprise to the children gathered at the Brewton Public Library for a demonstration by the Alabama Forestry Commission.
The surprises came when Regional Management Specialist Madeline Hildreth explained that products such as toothpaste, shampoo and cat food contained ingredients that are taken from trees.
While presenting information about how the forest is managed, Hildreth discussed prescribed burning of forestlands each year.
A question and answer period with those in attendance revealed that the wildlife found in the forest is prolific.
Hildreth explained that all land plants contain a compound called cellulose, which provides trees with rigidity and support.
The Forestry Commission's demonstration was one of many held as part of the Summer Reading Program at the library each Thursday morning.
The Reading Program will continue each Thursday through July 27, with the Cooperative Environment group presenting on July 13 at 10 and 10:45 a.m.
