It does not matter what the activity is; David Maddox just loves competition.
That passion has fueld Maddox's enjoyment of coaching in Brewton Little League. Of course, being part of teams that have had considerable success has also helped Maddox enjoy the competition.
Maddox is currently guiding the Brewton 11-year-old all-stars into state competition, which kicks off Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Mobile against the Huntsville area champion.
Like many youth league coaches, Maddox got into coaching because of his child. Son Wesley Maddox is also a member of the 11-year-olds who will be competing at state.
Coaching Little League has meant more than just showing up at the ballpark for Maddox. It has become like a second job.
Maddox loves a certain kind of player for his teams.
Maddox has coached all-star competition for Brewton teams three years in a row. He was
an assistant coach on the 9-10s
that qualified for the state
tournament two years ago. Maddox was the head coach on last summer's 9-10s that lost
in the district championship round.
Maddox said his assistant coaches, Steve Yuhasz and Randy Hunt, are big assets for his team.
Maddox said his biggest ally during the Little League season is his wife, Nona.
