School system head in right direction with plan
Brewton school officials have a lot on their plate for the next five years. With plans for an $11 million middle school and renovations to athletic facilities and other school improvements, the school board has an ambitious slate of projects ahead.
The school district plans to use state and local funding as well as a $17.5 million bond issue to pay for the improvements.
That's a lot of money, but school officials have been planning well in advance for all of the projects.
One thing that has helped significantly is the 10-mill tax that voters in Escambia County and Brewton approved in 2003.
The school board has been smart with that money, squirreling much of it away to help offset the indebtedness the board will incur with the new school and other projects.
Brewton needs a new middle school to help better prepare its students for high school and beyond, and we're glad to see those plans continuing.
The plans Brewton has in store make it even more apparent that voters need to renew a 4-mill tax package that will be on a special ballot in September.
Our community has long been committed to education, and we have a strong school system - and ambitious plans for the future - to show for it.
