Here are the next two buildings in historic downtown Brewton. Don't forget to let me know about any other businesses, which were located in these buildings.
115 St. Joseph Ave.
This building was built in 1902 to house Luttrell Hardware. It is a two-story brick building with a decorative brick cornice and five bay segmental arched windows with corbelled hoods. The first floor was altered in 1960 with glass and aluminum. In 1912, Luttrell Hardware had to move to a bigger building (220-222 St. Joseph Ave.). The 1910 map shows that the building was used as a hardware store. Hainje's started on Mildred Street in 1916 and moved to this site in 1924. They remained in this building until they moved to a different site on Belleville Avenue where the Paris Market and NDI's Cracked Pot are located in 2006. The store was originally Hainje's Specialty Company and in 1930 became Hainje's Home Furnishings. In 1931 they had over 5,000 customers all over south Alabama. In that year they sold 18 railroad carloads of furniture. They sold 98 percent of the awnings in Brewton and 95 percent of the window shades used. This store was one of the three stores that brought people from 100 miles into Brewton to shop. Weaver's Apparel store is located here in 2006.
113 St. Joseph Ave.
This building was built between 1898 and 1903. It is a two-story, brick building with a parapet and has arched central section with a recessed panel. There are double windows in each of the second floor bays. The first floor was altered with glass and aluminum in 1960. It was a barbershop for many years. Dr. H.H. Hagood had an office here for many years. Hutto's Dry Goods store was also here. Henry Hill Jewelry has also been located here.
