Running, throwing and catching. Those are the opening drills at practice for the East Brewton Youth Football and Cheerleading Association.
Children participating in the various divisions of play range in age from 5 to 12 years old, according to Andrea Chavers, president of the association.
In recent years there has been a struggle having enough players to make a team in the 11and 12-year-old Pee Wee division, Chavers said.
The Termites group is made up of players in the 9- and 10-year-old range and is coached by Jonathan Godbolt. Assistant coaches for the team are Brian Chavers and Jeffrey Joyner.
The 5- to 8-year-old group will be forming two teams this year, Chavers said.
Other coaches for the Tiny Mites and Midgets teams are Reginald Benjamin, Greg Winchester, Heath Nelson and Kevin Parker.
All of the teams are gearing up for a full season of action across the region in the Tri-County Football League, Chavers said.
Jamboree play will begin at 1:45 p.m. against Opp with the tiny Mites followed by the Termites at 3 p.m. and the Pee Wee team at 4:15 p.m.
The regular season games will begin on Sept. 16 in East Brewton. All East Brewton teams will be playing against teams from Baker on that day. Other games scheduled for the season will be Sept. 23 against Straughn; Sept. 30 against Andalusia; Oct. 7 at Cresview; Oct. 14 at Opp; and Oct. 21 at Straughn.
The Tri-County Super Bowl Championship will be held Oct. 28 at Baker with the top four teams from each age group being invited to play.
