Gary Neidhardt changed his mind about coming to Jefferson Davis Community College as a player. He did not do the same when the Warhawks baseball coach Darrell Blevins offered him a chance to join his staff as an assistant coach.
Neidhardt, a 2002 graduate of Mary G. Montgomery High School in Mobile, spent one season at Okaloosa-Walton before he opted to transfer to Faulkner State. It was at Faulkner State where Neidhardt had his first encounter with Blevins, who was an assistant coach with the Sun Chiefs at that time.
After Neidhardt finished up his junior college eligibility, he transferred to South Alabama and played two more seasons there.
Blevins was left without an assistant coach when Josey Shannon left the program for an assistant coaching position at Pensacola Junior College.
Although he is just 21, Neidhardt has some coaching experience. He has coached high school age players the last two summers.
While his assistant coaching job at JDCC will be a jack-of-all-trades, Neidhardt's specialty will be pitchers since that is his background.
Although he has been away from it for a couple of years, Neidhardt said the Alabama Community College Conference where JDCC competes is very competitive.
