The summer driving season is the most deadly time of the year for drivers. In fact, half of the traffic fatalities over the 2004 Labor Day holiday were alcohol related, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In response to this statistic, law enforcement officials across the Southeast will be cracking down on impaired drivers through the &#8220Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” campaign.
This campaign, which began Aug. 16 and continues through Labor Day, is designed to stop alcohol-related tragedies by catching those who decide to get behind the wheel after drinking.
This year marks the first time that the &#8220Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” campaign has been used in Alabama. The new slogan sends would-be drunk drivers a message of zero tolerance.  If you are over the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit, whether it's by .01 or .1, you will be arrested.  Drunk driving is no accident, and it is not a victimless crime.
According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report, more than 1.4 million people were arrested for driving under the influence in 2004.
In that same year, more than 15,000 people were killed in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .01 or higher.  Of those, more than 440 occurred in Alabama.
The consequences for being caught driving drunk include suspended licenses, large fines and jail time; even for first-time offenders.
