Don't forget to remember
With the anniversary of Sept. 11 coming up Monday, several organizations in the Brewton and East Brewton area have planned special events in remembrance of those lost on that day.
One event planned is being sponsored by the Woodmen of the World Lodge and the City of East Brewton and will be held at Fort Crawford Park. The ceremony will honor those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and those on Flight 93. Tributes to those who have lost their lives in battle following the attack will also be held.
The group is planning to dedicate a flagpole, flag and memorial plaque during the day's events that are set to get underway at 10 a.m.
Another event planned for the day is being held in Flomaton with similar ceremonies. The commemoration begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Flomaton Fire Department Station 32. During the ceremonies the dedication of the flagpole and presentation of a commemorative flag will be held. Dedication of the new firehouse will also be held during that ceremony.
Dignitaries will no doubt be on hand for both events. Those who want to remember the lives of those lost during and after the events of Sept. 11 will be on hand to mark this solemn anniversary.
The Brewton community lost one resident - Tamara Thurman - at the Pentagon, and we have lost two more young people, Chris Winchester and Phillip Travis, in the war on terror that has followed the attacks. We need to remember and honor these heroes.
We encourage you to attend a ceremony in remembrance of this special anniversary. We further encourage everyone to remember not to forget.
