The joy of a owning a new piece of equipment at the Brewton Police Department was short-lived as a national recall was issued Thursday for the Segway scooter.
According to the manufacturer, the &#8220speed limiter” in a Segway can cause it to tip backward suddenly, throwing off the rider. The company has already devised a fix for this bug, and owners are encouraged to contact the company for information about obtaining the software upgrade.
The scooter was purchased to aid in foot patrols at community functions attended by Brewton police.
The cost of the scooters usually ranges between $4,000 and $5,500.
Brewton Police were able to purchase the model currently owned by the department for $4,000. Funds used to make the purchase were taken from drug-related confiscations, McGougin said.
The recall covers all Segways currently on the market-the i-series, p-series, e-series, XT, GT and i2 models. It does not cover the X2, which is slated for debut later this month.
Information concerning the recall will be used to update the computer technology installed in the scooter.
