A train accident in downtown Brewton Wednesday left minor injuries - and a major mess.
People who work and shop in downtown Brewton were surprised Wednesday when a CSX train struck a tractor-trailer at the Deer Street crossing.
At approximately 8:03 a.m., the truck loaded with wood chips was involved in a collision with the train. The driver of the truck, Robert Gumapac of Brewton, attempted a left turn off Deer Street onto St. Joseph Avenue into the path of the oncoming train, reports said. The truck was owned by J.R.'s Trucking of Brewton.
Gumapac was coming from T.R. Miller with a load of wood chips when the accident occurred. He was transported to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Downtown traffic was congested for approximately four hours while the wreckage and wood chips were cleared from the roadway. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
A group of ladies were gathered at Book and Bean when the accident occurred.
